Perhaps you’re already doing your part to lessen this impact? Here are a few suggestions. What do you think about them? Do you have any other ideas?

Be informed: when making purchases, learn about the origin, method of fabrication and form of exploitation (sustainable or not) of the desired item.

Hunting and fishing enthusiasts: respect the quotas that allow for the sustainable exploitation of resources.

Check the list of best fish choices when shopping for groceries. Some organizations have produced lists indicating species of fish caught using sustainable fishing practices. A few examples: farmed tilapia, Alaska pollock, Pacific whiting and farmed rainbow trout.

Stunned, outraged, disgusted: you might experience all these reactions after reading this text. Don’t forget that every action counts. Would you honestly want to eat the flesh of a gorilla? Do you already eat wild meat such as moose and white-tailed deer? Do you think we should prohibit people from consuming the products of their hunt, a means of subsistence for many populations? Should we market this meat and sell it freely? Give us your opinion on the subject. In the meantime, here’s how you can help the cause of certain species threatened by the bush meat phenomenon.

Encourage relatives and friends to recycle their old cell phones. This way, telephone companies can reuse coltan, a mineral ore used in the manufacture of cell phones that endangers the habitat of African gorillas in areas where it is mined. What’s more, poachers gain easier access to the forest thanks to the roads developed to transport the raw material.
http://www.cellular-news.com/coltan/

Bush meat, no thanks. When travelling, learn about the meat you consume. Some restaurants serve this kind of meat, very often illegally.

What did your parents bring you back from their last trip? Do you have any suggestions for souvenirs you’d like them to bring back from their next trip? Maybe you’ve already accompanied them on a trip? What kinds of souvenirs did you choose? After reading this text, would you make a different choice? Here are a few suggestions. What do you think?

Use your buying power. Ask questions, read labels and request documentation about how to make enlightened choices.
http://www.worldwildlife.org/what/globalmarkets/wildlifetrade/buyersbeware.html

Buy alternative souvenirs (WWF) such as woven items (baskets, hats, mats) produced locally, jewellery of glass, stone or coconut (instead of shell or coral), paintings and CDs by local artists or hand-crafted objects of wire and sheet metal.

Don’t judge. The culture and life conditions of inhabitants in the country visited are very different from ours. Therefore, it’s important not to judge; use the opportunity instead to learn about our cultural differences.

Fashion influences most people’s buying habits. Is this aspect of some concern to you? Do you believe that sometimes our choices must also reflect our values? And after reading this text, how do you feel about the type of clothing and trim made from animals or parts of animals? Here’s our point of view. What’s yours?

It’s often preferable to buy clothes made from recycled synthetic fibers. These fibers are an interesting alternative to fur; however, some types of fibers – polyester, spandex and nylon, for example – are highly polluting. Textiles made from recycled fibers are a more eco-friendly alternative. Lyocell (Tencel), made from chemically-transformed wood pulp, is also a good choice.

Encourage people you know to donate their old furs to educational organizations (the Granby Zoo regularly receives these types of donations) or to designers who will give the furs a second life.

Nowadays, the things we eat or buy and the products that go into them come from the four corners of the globe. Their manufacture may thus contribute to habitat loss for species as diverse as the Amur tiger, the black-tailed prairie dog or the gorilla. We are therefore collectively responsible for the survival of all species. Take action!

Get involved in the environmental group in your school or neighbourhood.

Demonstrate good citizenship in nature parks. Use beaches reserved for swimming and avoid protected areas.

Eat vegetarian. Once a week, ask your parents to use a meat substitute (beans, tofu, eggs) in one of your favourite dishes. Cattle production uses a third of the planet’s farmland. A farmer must feed a cow 15 kg of grain and 30 kg of hay to produce a single kilogram of beef.

Climate change is a hot-button issue! Have you already discussed this subject with your parents and friends, or even in class? Do you feel powerless before the enormity of the problem? And yet, there are simple actions you can take to reduce your contribution to the greenhouse effect. Do you have any ideas? Here are ours.

Dry your clothes outdoors on a clothesline. One T-shirt can release 4 kg of CO2 into the air during its lifetime, mainly because of washing and drying. Encourage your parents to wash clothes in cold water and dry them outdoors. Offer to help them.

Walk, cycle, or use public transportation when travelling less than a kilometre.

Avoid using the remote starter. A 2 to 3-minute warm-up is all an engine needs to run smoothly. If each Canadian driver reduced idling by 5 minutes a day, 1.6 million fewer tonnes of CO2 emissions would be released each year.

Does your city or town ban the use of pesticides on lawns? Have you already witnessed a pollution incident (like someone throwing paper on the ground)? Did you intervene? After reading this text, do you feel better informed about intervening in another such situation? Here are some things you can do to reduce the pollution you generate.

With your class, organize a clean-up of the park near your school.

Make a waste-free lunch: the use of reusable containers for food and beverages can reduce the quantity of waste in lunchboxes. Why not launch a waste-free lunch challenge to all students in your class or school?

Consume organic foods: the production of organic foods eliminates the use of pesticides, insecticides, growth hormones and antibiotics, which contaminate the environment for many years. The consumption of these foods protects wildlife and its habitats by helping to reduce the use of these highly toxic products. Every organic product must carry the seal of organic certification.
